Three years ago, I found myself in a unique position. I had recently made a career change from medicine to technology and was searching for a new role. During my job search, I wanted to find a company that would value me, my experience, and offer a community of people who would support my career goals. Applying for job after job felt daunting and nerve-wracking because I knew my resume might get lost in the typical applicant tracking system. I realized that my skill set shines best when I’m able to connect with someone in person. And then I received a phone call that changed everything. My friend reached out and mentioned he had an extra ticket to attend AfroTech, a premier tech, investing, and wealth-building conference for Black technologists. I knew AfroTech was the best place to find my next opportunity. So, I printed my resume, drove two hours from Houston to Austin, TX, and spent the next three days at the conference going from booth to booth, searching for my next role. Thankfully, I found Vanguard—and the rest is history. I had the opportunity to interview for an Application Engineer role and secured an offer the very next day! Out of all the companies I interviewed with, Vanguard stood out the most, particularly because of their strong commitment to building a diverse and inclusive community for crew members.

Life at Vanguard

My journey during my first year at Vanguard has been nothing short of amazing. I’ve had the opportunity to build my expertise and professional network through specialized programs and organizations like the Application Engineer Technology Program, which offers tailored training and development for IT professionals, and BOLD, Vanguard’s Black Organization for Leadership and Development crew resource group. BOLD has been instrumental in fostering connections and inclusivity.

As an active person who ran track and field in college, one of the highlights of my first year was joining Vanguard’s Track Club and fulfilling a lifelong dream—competing at the Penn Relays. This was something I had aspired to do since high school, and to experience it with my colleagues made it even more special. We spent months either waking up early to run before work or staying late after work to run and practice handoffs. Beyond track, I also participated in intramural sports like Ultimate Frisbee and Flag Football, building camaraderie with teammates and strengthening bonds across the company.

Another thing I enjoy about working at Vanguard is the opportunities I’ve had to give back to the community. One of the most rewarding experiences I’ve had was participating in a “Vanguard Gives Back” community service initiative in Grand Prairie, TX, where we built a playground for an elementary school. Spending the entire day alongside my colleagues while making an impact really reinforced how much I enjoy giving back. And I loved that I was able to do this through my job! But ultimately, it wasn’t just about the work we did that day—it was about the connections formed and the shared purpose that made the experience so fulfilling.

A Full Circle Moment

Then everything came full circle. A year after joining Vanguard, I had the opportunity to return to AfroTech—but this time on behalf of Vanguard—to help recruit top talent. It was surreal to stand on the other side of the booth, meeting and connecting with students and professionals who were looking for their next opportunity, reminding me of myself just a few years ago. Sharing my journey, experiences, and the support I’ve received at Vanguard was incredibly rewarding. Seeing the excitement in their eyes and knowing that I played a role in helping someone take their next step toward their career goals made the experience unforgettable.

During my time at Vanguard, I’ve learned that the journey is just as important as the destination. Immersing yourself in the process and enjoying every step of the way makes you a better engineer, designer, data analyst—or whatever you aspire to be. Using the resources Vanguard provides, such as the Application Engineer Technology Program, mentorship programs, and collaborative teams, has been crucial for my professional growth. On a personal level, Vanguard has supported me beyond my career. They allowed me to relocate from the Pennsylvania office to the Texas office, bringing me closer to my friends and loved ones. This level of support is something I truly value.

Vanguard has provided me with more than just a job—it has given me a place to grow, thrive, find community, and give back. I’m grateful for the journey so far and I’m always excited for what the future holds.
