I initially learned about Vanguard at a Financial Planning Club meeting while attending the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign. As a student with a concentration in Financial Planning, I was actively pursuing a career in this field.

As I explored potential career opportunities, Vanguard’s Financial Advisor Development Program (FADP) immediately caught my attention. I was motivated to jump-start my career and obtain all the necessary industry licenses right out of college. After all, I had just completed the Certified Financial Planner (CFP®) approved coursework through my financial planning classes and was eager to continue learning.

What stood out to me about FADP was the company’s commitment to investing in my future. Vanguard fully supported me in passing the SIE, Series 7, Series 66, and CFP® exams. I had my work cut out for me, but I am ambitious and knew I had Vanguard’s support every step of the way.

Financial Advisor Development Program

FADP is a 27-month rotational program that is designed to help you develop the critical skills needed to become a successful financial advisor while working directly with experienced CFP® professionals. My first rotation involved obtaining the necessary licenses needed to work in the Advice sector. My days were dedicated to studying and preparing for these exams using the resources that were provided by Vanguard along with a strong study regimen.

After successfully passing the exams, I then transitioned to the Advisor Support Group role where I assisted clients and advisors with transactional tasks. Next, I moved into a sales role where I spoke with clients who were considering enrolling in one of our advice services. I discussed the different advice services offered and how they could meet the client’s needs. Currently, I am working in the Mass Affluent space with a team of experienced advisors. My primary role includes working with clients to understand their goals and providing guidance to help them navigate their investment options.

Support and mentorship

In addition to training, I was also aligned to a High Net Worth Advisor Advisor as my mentor throughout the program. My mentor dedicates time each week to meet with me, helping me build my financial acumen and skillsets. A typical day in my role as an advisor includes having phone conversations with clients and helping them meet their long-term financial goals through Vanguard’s methodology and investment strategy.

I assist clients with a variety of topics including retirement planning, investment planning, and more. My favorite part of each day is hearing from clients that I was able to help them achieve peace of mind following our conversation. I entered this field to help clients achieve investment success and feel comfortable with having a long-term strategy that helps them meet their goals, whatever those may be. I love how clients are treated like family at Vanguard and always put first.

Reflection

Looking back on where I started when I began compared to where I am today, I am truly impressed by all that my peers and I have accomplished in such a short period of time. We successfully passed our licensing exams and developed valuable skills that we use and build upon daily with clients. The industry is constantly evolving which keeps the work exciting and challenging!

Upon completion of the program, I will transition into a full-time position in Vanguard’s High Net Worth Advice Group where I will have the opportunity to manage my own book of Vanguard clients, build strong and long-term relationships with them and help support their success.

If you are highly ambitious and interested in a career in financial advising, I would highly recommend apply for FADP. It offers a comprehensive and supportive environment that fosters growth and prepares you for a successful career.
