We’re a mission-driven organization
Vanguard opened its doors with a radical ownership structure that, to this day, remains unique in the asset management industry. We’re owned by the people who invest in our funds—not shareholders, not private owners.1 With no outside owners to satisfy, we focus squarely on meeting the needs of our clients.
Our core purpose
To take a stand for all investors, to treat them fairly, and to give them the best chance for investment success.
What we offer
Our purpose drives us towards our goal of offering the best possible advice, investments, and retirement services, as well as insights that bring clarity to the complicated world of investing. We offer low-cost products and services to meet long-term investment goals—helping clients plan for lives full of adventure, family, and legacy for future generations.
50 million investors
We’re one of the largest asset managers in the world. Our aim is to safeguard our clients’ assets with care and prudence, which is why we’re one of the most trusted names in investing.
It’s not about me. It’s about we. We want every investor, every owner—to be successful in what they’re trying to achieve. This drives my passion to do even more.”

Serving investors for nearly five decades
Vanguard’s story began in 1929 with the Wellington Fund, a fledgling fund invested in stocks and high-quality bonds. During an era known for high-risk investing, Wellington took a conservative approach.
In 1975, our founder, John C. Bogle, sought to create a better way to manage a mutual fund company. He began a modest start-up, named Vanguard, and adopted the philosophy of the Wellington Fund: balance, diversification, discipline, and a long-term perspective.
With the confidence of this sound and sensible investment approach, Vanguard set a course toward industry leadership—introducing the first index mutual fund, adopting commission-free sales of Vanguard funds, and moving fixed income management in-house.
